Why become a volunteer Event Health Officer?

Every year our First Aid Awareness Officers connect St John WA with thousands of people through free and fun first aid learning opportunities. This is a great opportunity to contribute towards making first aid a part of everyone’s life and building resilient communities on a personal basis.

Taking the step to volunteer with our Youth and Community team opens up an array of opportunities for different experiences and interactions with St John WA and your community. As a volunteer with us, you will attend a wide variety of community events and perform an essential role in building resilience amongst the community by demonstrating a range of first aid skills to the youngest members of our community. As a volunteer, you are given the training, support and confidence to feel ready in your role to help build a stronger community.

What your role involves

  • Assist the public to tour a display ambulance and learn about emergencies
  • Demonstrating first aid skills at public places and events such as CPR and bandaging
  • Engaging with the community at family orientated events
  • Encouraging the public to complete first aid training
  • Providing the public with information about St John WA resources including our apps and services
  • Working effectively with other team members and other service personnel
  • Representing St John WA professionally and positively
  • Maintaining the safety and wellbeing of self and others
  • Respect St John WA values
  • Expectation: Regular participation at events across the year

 

Skills required

  • Provide First Aid Certificate, or willing to obtain with St John
  • Working with Children Check, or willing to obtain
  • Friendly disposition, great communication and presentation skills
  • Experience working with children in a youth or community setting desirable but not essential
  • Ability to work in a team

The application process

  • Step 1 - Apply to become a volunteer - click HERE.
  • Step 2 - Volunteer Sourcing will call to book you into an interview.
  • Step 3 - Attend your interview with any outstanding documentation requested.
  • Step 4 - Application process completed. If your application is successful, you will be offered a volunteer position with Youth and Community Engagement and will be contacted for next steps.
    • This application will take about 20 minutes to complete. If you cannot complete the application right now, you can click 'Save Progress' to save your work and come back at any time within the next 14 days.
    • You will need to upload a copy of your driver’s license so have a digital copy ready (you can take a photo of it with your smartphone).
    • You will also need an up-to-date National Police Clearance. There’s a link on the application form to organise this—remember you can save your application form at any stage and come back to it.
    • We also require you to complete a medical questionnaire as part of the application. All these steps are there to ensure your safety and the safety of the people you’re helping.

     

The Onboarding Process

  • Complete the St John WA Volunteer Online Induction (approximately 4 hours)
  • Complete Provide First Aid course (1-day course provided by St John) or submit evidence of current certification (must be less than 12 months since date of issue)
  • Attend Welcome Induction via Microsoft Teams (approximately 1 hour)
  • Attend First Aid Awareness Training Session & Orientation (approx. 3 hours)

 

Skills you will develop

Being a First Aid Awareness Officer will develop your communication skills and build confidence by allowing you to engage with a wide variety of people. Being part of a large volunteer team will help you connect with other like-minded volunteers in the Perth area.

  • All our volunteers are provided with the necessary training to enable them to carry out their role. To continue to operate in your role, you must maintain the competencies required and an appropriate level of fitness as roles are physically demanding.

 

 

Volunteering locations

Meaningful volunteering events are located across the metro area. Divisional meetings are held at St John Central Hub in Belmont.

Required documentation

To become a volunteer with St John Ambulance Western Australia, you will be asked to complete an online application, including a medical questionnaire and the following:

  • National Police Clearance (Valid within the past 6 months)
  • ID (such as a drivers licence, or passport, or birth certificate)
Recruitment Method

Ongoing training

All our volunteers are provided with the necessary training to enable them to carry out their role. To continue to operate in your role, you must maintain the competencies required and an appropriate level of fitness as roles are physically demanding.

All information concerning our volunteers is treated as strictly confidential at all times.

Expenses

Your volunteering for St John Ambulance should not cost you anything. We will reimburse all legitimate out of pocket expenses incurred during your time volunteering with us. You should talk to your supervisor to confirm what expenses you can claim.

Workplace Behaviour Policy

Volunteers will be informed of the Occupational Safety and Health requirements applicable to volunteers. Safety Injury and Support Services provide extensive information about their services and policies on the intranet.

St John places a very high value on the health and wellbeing of their volunteers and provides an extensive support network through its confidential Wellbeing and Support program, accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
