HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care

This accredited course provides the skills and knowledge required for a healthcare worker to participate in safe work practices when involved in caring directly for clients within nursing, aged care and home care environments. There is also a focus on maintaining safety of the worker, the clients wellbeing support, and the community.

Who this course is recommended for
• Nurses & student nurses
• Aged care workers in nursing homes, community services and home environment.

This course includes online learning and 4.5 hours of practical training and assessment. Completion of online learning is required prior to arrival at the class.

You must arrive 15 minutes prior to class start time for screening and hygiene procedures.

Overview

The course covers a Refresher on the knowledge and performance criteria in accordance with HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care Unit of Competency and Assessment Requirements, located on training.gov.au.

Prior to attending the course, learners are sent a link to complete mandatory online pre-course learning and assessment by reading the Student Guide and successfully answering 34 knowledge quiz questions at their own pace. In addition, students can practise filling in a Risk Assessment Record form attached as a Student resources to this course. These must be completed prior to attending the face-to-face refresher session.

The practical session includes demonstration, practise and skills assessment including the confirmation of knowledge gained in the pre-course online learning. Students must respond to simulated scenarios applying manual handling skills including:

  • Managing an unconscious breathing casualty

  • Moving a patient from wheelchair to shower chair

  • Moving a patient from chair to standing

  • Moving a patient from floor to chair

  • Assisted walking and sitting up in a bed

Requirements

The HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care Unit of Competency standards require a level of physical ability to meet the evidence requirements for assessment. These standards relate to the level of performance required to provide safe manual handling tasks for client handling.

Due to the potential risk to health and safety where a nominated first aider, or worker with duty of care, does not have the ability to perform resuscitation and/or first aid to the performance standard, it is not appropriate to issue a statement of attainment to learners who are physically unable to meet the assessment requirements.
