Accidents can happen at any time and sometimes the only person available to help is a young person.

St John Ambulance offers FREE first aid training to students, so they know what to do if they are faced with a first aid emergency.

Schools can select from the following age-appropriate practical sessions:

Kindergarten - Pre primary:

30 minutes - Story time

Through a storybook and with the aid of Kura the Bear, children will see how to identify an emergency, what number to call in an emergency and understand the role of who can help in an emergency.

Years 1 & 2

45 minutes – 1 hour - (DRS of the DRSABCD)

Students will learn how to recognise a DANGER, how to get someone to RESPOND accordingly and when and how to SEND for help in an emergency. At the end of the session students will be able to understand what an emergency is and how to recognise an ambulance and a paramedic.

Years 3 - 6

1 hour - (DRSAB of the DRSABCD)

This session is designed to provide opportunities to identify, practise and develop the student’s skills. The focus for the students will be able to assess the casualty’s conditions, check airways and breathing and how to place the casualty into the recovery position.

Years 7 - 10

1 hour 20 minutes - (DRSABC of the DRSABCD)

This is a practical course that focuses on developing the students skills. The aim of the course is to provide every student with the opportunity to practise the priority first aid skills. By the end of the session the students will be able to demonstrate the management of an unconscious casualty who is not breathing normally by using the DRSABCD action plan and CPR.

Skills promoted by the program

The First Aid Focus program aims to train and equip students with the skills to assess and respond to first aid situations, while developing strategies to seek help for themselves or others.

Experienced Community Education Officers demonstrate the correct first aid approach and students have the opportunity to practise and rehearse these life-saving skills.

The practical skill-based sessions support students learning by teaching them how to enhance their own and others’ health, safety and wellbeing in varied and changing contexts.

The sessions also provide opportunities for students to:

  • Develop and refine resilience skills.
  • Learn and practice the ability to make safe decisions, manage risk and take actions to promote the health and safety of themselves and others.
  • Learn to take a critical approach to and to access, analyse and apply a variety of resources for the benefit of themselves and the communities.
