First Aid Focus High School

St John WA provides First Aid Focus, a free in-school program that allows WA students to learn basic first aid skills. This program offers fun, engaging, age appropriate classes for all students ranging from Year 7 – Year 10. Our Experienced Community Education Officers demonstrate the correct first aid approach as well as students having the opportunity to practice and rehearse these live-saving skills.  

Schools must have a minimum of 3 consecutive classes and a maximum of 5 classes per day. Maximum 32 students per class with a minimum of 10. 


First Aid Focus Program

Year 7

50 minutes to 1 hour - Respiratory Conditions

This practical session focuses on the treatment of asthma, choking, severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis. The session aims to provide every student with the opportunity to practise first aid skills. The demonstration should be built on the student's prior knowledge of the Action Plan and reinforces the message that in any emergency, a first aider should seek the help of an adult and emergency service professional.  


First Aid Focus Program

Year 8

50 minutes to 1 hour - Outdoor Simulation

This session focuses on treating snakebites, sprains and strains, fractures, and dehydration in an outdoor setting. The session aims to give students the opportunity to practise first aid skills, so they can assist themselves and others in a first aid emergency. The demonstration is designed to be built on the student's prior knowledge of the Action Plan and reinforces the message that in any emergency, a first aider should seek the help of an adult and emergency service professional.

Year 9

50 minutes to 1 hour - Chain of Survival

The session aims to provide every student with the opportunity to practise first aid skills. The demonstration should be built on the student's prior knowledge of the Action Plan and reinforces the message that in any emergency, a first aider should seek the help of an adult and emergency service professional. This will help keep themselves and others safe, equipping them with the ability to provide the care needed to an unconscious casualty.

Year 10

50 minutes to 1 hour - Trauma Course

This session focuses on treating severe bleeding, burns and scalds, spinal injury, and chest pain. The session aims to allow every student to practise first aid skills. The demonstration should be built on the student's prior knowledge of the Action Plan to reinforce the message that in any emergency, a first aider should seek the help of an adult and emergency service professional.
